Fifth grade students from Meece Middle School recently took a field trip to Frankfort to learn about the rich history of Kentucky. They toured the Kentucky Historical Society Museum where they viewed the Gallery that takes a 12,000-year journey from prehistoric times to the modern day. The students visited exhibits such as the mirror that hung in Lexington Madam Belle Brezing’s parlor; the coat that Gov. William Goebel wore the day of his assassination; the pocket watch Abraham Lincoln carried in 1860; as well as experience what wartime and peace time felt like in Kentucky history. Students discovered the things that illustrate everyday life for countless Kentuckians who helped set the Commonwealth’s course, such as handmade quilts that women carefully stitched to provide warmth for their families, hand-crafted furniture which stored the family treasures and tools of their trade. The student then toured the Old State Capitol and learned the history of the building and examined artifacts that traveling Congressmen would’ve had carried on their journeys to Frankfort in the early days of our state.
Meece Middle School 5th graders had an exciting day learning about the City of Somerset on Wednesday, October 30th. The students walked to the Citizens National Bank Pavilion where they were greeted by City of Somerset Police Chief Wesley and a few of his officers. Chief Wesley spoke with the student about different opportunities in his department and answered students’ questions about what the department does day to day. Officers gave the students sunglasses as souvenir to remember the day by. The rest of the day was filled with interactive activities and interesting stories about downtown Somerset such as the murals that Jordan Justice painted and ghost stories about Clara Marrow, The Zollicoffer Tree at Mill Springs, and Train Tunnel #9. The students visited the historic Virgina Theater for a tour and learned about the rich history of the theater. The students were treated with some pumpkin cookies and some roasted pumpkin seeds while they observed parent volunteers display their pumpkin carving skills.
